Definitive proof of Andrea Rossi’s claims remain elusive. At this stage, although there is room to worry, too many conclude that the eCat is nonsense and Rossi a fraud, without proof. I will not do that. We have to recognise that credible and qualified people have been party to close quarter testing. Controlled by the inventor, those tests do not constitute the proof we require but they do give us cause to continue watching. I would personally warn anyone against investing without due diligence but fully understand why someone might step inside the circle with a bunch of cash to find out what really lies behind that curtain.

The case for cold fusion beyond the eCat (in my opinion) is becoming stronger even as it too remains on the what-if? shelf.  [Note Professor Francesco Celani's Aug 12 demo]. Keep these comments in mind while reading some of the background written below.


To many, inventor Andrea Rossi’s eCat is the coming saviour of the planet – an energy device that could spawn a trillion dollar industry, reshape geopolitics and clean up the environment – all in a few short years. To others, it is not – they don’t believe it.

Born from the bastard child of science – cold fusion – most scientists are rightly sceptical until proof is given. According to Andrea Rossi, that proof will be determined by the market – customers will decide if his claims are real or not. Thus, he has presold his first unit, a 1MW thermal device to be delivered to that customer by the end of October 2011. According to Rossi, if it performs as he says, he will be paid and if it doesn’t, he won’t.

This is not to say he has kept the eCat away from scientists. This is one of the more intriguing aspects of the adventure. A small but significant number of qualified scientists have been given hands-on access and have announced tacit approval while none of that group has publically briefed against it. Until definitive proof is given as promised, it is reasonable for anyone to reserve judgement – after all, the new energy arena is replete with broken promises.

A number of watchers have made their decision already and some of these post almost obsessively on various eCat related sites, calling Rossi a fraudster; the whole thing a scam. This group is unwilling to wait for proof before accusing the inventor, sticking with the belief that what he says is impossible, that the scientists who have endorsed it are fools and therefore that Rossi must be lying. The obvious technical knowledge these posters display and their missionary-like zeal, often shapes the discussion and sometimes colours it red. Passions flare and suspicion runs high that there is an alternative motive. They will tell you that there is no evidence, conflating that term with proof. Indeed there is no proof, but there is certainly a good deal of evidence. The following eCatNews Briefs are intended to act as a primer, taking readers with little or no knowledge of the subject to a point where they can decide for themselves if Rossi is worth watching until Delivery Day or not.


As October rushes towards us, cold fusion is largely ignored by the media. Defkalion’s press conference (23 June 2011) demonstrated a latent interest in the eCat but perhaps we should not be surprised that they are being cautious. Andrea Rossi’s eye is on rolling the business out, not in trying to convince the scientific community. Thus, critical information is missing and, one way or another, that latent interest will only break when some new piece reveals itself or an editor takes a risk and kicks the whole thing off.

Until then, anyone coming to the party without the benefit of a scientific background or more time on their hands than a Cat D lifer will be at the mercy of Google to get up to speed. Good luck with that!

It’s not that there is no information, but that there is too much of it, some misinformed or massaged according to non-obvious motives.

If you are a scientist, you are covered. If you are a conspiracy theorist you are in heaven.

This is for those of us who have not made up our minds, trying to find the path between blind belief and FUD.

The first thing to recognise is that no one but Rossi has the complete picture. It’s reasonable to assume that those close to him (Focardi, Levi etc) have a good handle on the reality of the device but, reasonable as it is, it is still an assumption.

It’s useful to break the subject in two when trying to gauge the veracity of his claims. Two questions emerge:

Is cold fusion real?

Are Rossi’s claims true?

The first part of this Brief, will concentrate on question one.

Cold Fusion

Ask a scientist about cold fusion and his eyes will likely glaze over. Most will dismiss it out of hand. The short explanation for this hints at an astonishing episode in science. Rather than repeat the whole shebang, links are provided at the end for those who want to dig deeper:

In 1989, two electro-chemists (Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann) announced an unexpected and exciting discovery. The story was big and the phrase ‘cold fusion’ spread around the world like a celebrity scandal. Believed to require an inciting temperature of millions of degrees, nuclear fusion has been the energy dream of the future since the first Hydrogen bomb entered our lives. Billions of dollars have been spent trying to build a reactor capable of holding the power of the sun without melting whatever was holding it. If the electro-chemists were correct, fusion could be harnessed for a song and that would likely kill hot fusion research dead.

A mix of excitement and panic fired the scientific, government and business communities.

At that point, the field was so new that P & F were the only two experts around (using their particular process). Anxious for answers, ‘traditional’ fusion researchers were among many around the world keen to investigate. It did not take them long to decide that cold fusion was nonsense. The hot fusion guys sighed in relief. Their budgets were safe.

On the surface this seems reasonable, after all no one could replicate the experiments. The trouble is that in the politics of cold fusion, nothing is that obvious. Mindful of its potential worth, The University of Utah urged early disclosure – eighteen months before the two scientists felt they would be ready to publish. According to P & F, the process was unpredictable. After working on the project for years and able to kick-start the reaction only after some trouble, it was no surprise that initial results were modest or absent. Instead of sticking with it, scientists in a position of power zeroed on the ‘replication problems’ and pushed the poltical buttons hard. They also ridiculed the theory proposed by the chemists. The lack of nuclear signatures known to accompany hot fusion became their focus. P & F were not to be trusted.

Proposing theories that turn out to be flawed is a standard part of the scientific method but for P & F it became the stick with which they were beaten. One might expect the world to zone into the heart of their claim – that of excess energy. After all, this was the seat of excitement and the ability to measure such things well within their proven capabilities as scientists. Instead, the side-show became the main attraction and the hint of a previously unknown clean, cheap and inexhaustible energy source became a casualty of that strangely skewed view. It was as if you found the Golden Goose and announced that its magic might be a result of evolution. Alchemists, fearing their days are numbered, are ordered to investigate. They zero on the crazy theory, kick you in the pants and then cook the goose for the party celebrating its death.

It was not enough to kill the subject by laughing at the theory, the thing had to be completely destroyed.

P & F were called frauds and hounded from their careers. They were humiliated and both left the US, with Stanley Pons renouncing his US citizenship.

The subject was driven to the fringes and placed alongside alien abductions and complementary medicine. Even so, a handful of determined scientists who did not buy the derision carried on working in the wilderness. Unable to raise money from public funds or to publish their results in peer reviewed journals, they were largely invisible to mainstream science.

Thus the myth of cold fusion as nonsense was maintained and scientific group-think was marshalled by those who should have known better.

To call it a conspiracy is a stretch (although we cannot rule that out absolutely). Deliberate or not, there is no doubt that most career scientists do not know that P & F’s work has been replicated and extended over the years and that great leaps have been made in understanding what works and what does not. Studying the effect is easier as results become more predictable. Rather than fading away, cold fusion – rebranded as Low Energy Nuclear Reactions – has been reborn and is increasingly hard to ignore.

In November 2009, the US Defense Intelligence Agency published a report after studying the mass of material in the public arena. While they did not say that cold fusion was real, the tone of the report bucked the tendency for scorn and spelled out the implications for its success.

In May 2011, in an EV World interview, Dennis Bushnell, chief scientist at NASA Langley, declared that the organisation was conducting an experiment designed to test a theory that might explain what was going on. He added that, after recent discoveries, the field could now move forward fast. If it did, he said, on its own, LENR would alter geopolitics, the world economy and solve a large part of our energy and climate problems. This is an astonishing thing to say of a field that is still considered by many to be pseudoscience.

When a scientists tells you that cold fusion is nonsense, ask him if he has read any of the papers published and available online. The Defense Intelligence people have and so has Bushnell. If the answer is no, treat the reply with caution. Goup-think is a powerful force.

So, is cold Fusion (or LENR) real? While the jury is still out, only a fool would dismiss the field as unworthy of further study. Whatever name it goes by, Cold Fusion is bearing young fruit and excitement is building. Given the scale of any reward, it is only a matter of time before that group-think is shattered. At some point, it will break with sudden and ferocious rapidity. When that is, largely depends on what happens with Rossi’s eCat.

In October, 2011, following a freedom of information request, a report compiled by the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency was published. This report recorded a meeting held in Dec 2006 which included looking at LENR as a possible future energy source. Preceding the Defense Intelligence Agency Report by 3 years, it steps beyond the cautious language of that document. The following cites the concluding recommendations:

LENR still suffers from negative publicity associated with cold fusion and is viewed as being conducted outside the domain of legitimate, mainstream science. Nonetheless, the persistent and increasingly repeatable demonstrations of excess heat and transmutation suggest that there is something here worth pursuing. DTRA should not do so alone but rather foster consortia that would help bring discipline and rigorous experimental protocol to this field. Additionally, efforts to better understand the physics of LENR as well as the development of first-principle predictive models are encouraged.

NASA Video: So what was all THAT about?

What a bizarre week it has been.

Most puzzling of all has been the amazing NASA video which went to great lengths to extol the virtues of LENR, promising us a world of clean abundant energy before being shot down in flames by the same people who made it. As you do.

In our original post discussing the Zawodny NASA LENR video we said "This video by NASA seems to validate the work we have been seeing recently by Rossi, Focardi, Piantelli and Celani and the claims that LENR (Cold Fusion) is a valid technology with enough power and potential to completely replace fossil fuels and polluting nuclear power."

So in no way did we single out the work of Rossi and his eCat. What we said was that the NASA video validated LENR as a valid technology and Zawodny confirms this in his blog. It does not matter who crosses the finish line first, what matters is that LENR becomes integrated into our lives and we start to drag ourselves out of 19th century energy generation.

This is just an opinion, but If Zawodny is backtracking both by dissasociating himself and his work from "official" NASA control and by claiming LENR is not commercially viable then that's NOT what the video is hinting at. Want proof? Read the comments on the YouTube page and you'll quickly realise that people are certainly not interpreting the video as merely proof of excess heat.

Can NASA REALLY say they are surprised at the public reaction to the video?

The video has the official NASA logo stamped all over it, it repeatedly refers to NASA scientists and NASA patents. Meanwhile the video contains images of trucks, planes, ships and other power hungry transportation and hardware that presumably could be powered by LENR, so why are those images in the video if it was not intended for people to read this conclusion? What was the purpose of the video then? If it was to simply confirm that LENR produces excess heat and that it has real potential for the future then it's dead simple. Don't put trucks and planes in there. And how does one go about getting a video onto the official NASA technology portal? I'm willing to bet that anything going on there needs some sort of official sign-off and approval from a MUCH HIGHER AUTHORITY. Was it the censors day off?

And what about the timing of the release of this video? Is it just a coincidence that several LENR researchers (including Rossi) have been confirming USEFUL results and plans for commercialization? Is Rossi's seemingly rampant march towards commercial products pushing NASA on information release a little quicker than they would have liked?

It could be argued that the video was intended to go out with the intention of slowly drip feeding the public and preparing them for this new technology and that slowly over time this would have ramped up until we accepted it like it has always been that way. How do you boil a frog? - Very slowly so that it barely notices the slow rise in water temperature.

What ACTUALLY appears to have happened (and again this is only an opinion) is that NASA miscalculated the amount of public interest in LENR generated by Rossi over the last year. After realising that the public reaction was BIG they quickly moved to pour cold water on the story before it hit the global mainstream media. Their planned slow drip-feed may have turned into a potential Tsunami ahead of time.

Again, this is just an opinion, so no-one needs to get their knickers in a knot.

But buried in this whole story is a small but important fact and that is that Zawodny confirms that LENR in his professional opinion has been shown to produces excess heat. Essentially LENR (cold fusion)works!

Just try getting an official government agency to admit cold fusion was a real prospect even 12 months ago and I could have sold you a bridge in Brooklyn.

Can Pons & Fleishmann now get an official apology? Will the scientific community now admit they were wrong? Where are the old establishment oligarchs now? The ones who made sure cold fusion was killed off before it even got started.

In terms of the bigger picture, Cold fusion is no longer a dirty word.

National and international official govt policies on LENR have been CHANGED. The question is who ordered it and why?

Video: NASA Admits LENR Can Power The World

It's GAME OVER for traditional fossil fuels and conventional nuclear power as NASA admits LENR "Game Changer" can power everything cleanly and cheaply. What a start to 2012!

Dr Zawodny: "This other form of nuclear power releases energy by adding neutrons. Eventually they gain a sufficient number of neutrons that they spontaneously decay into something of the same mass but a different element."

Narrator: "The different element is cleaner than traditional nuclear fuels and can be produced with raw materials such as Nickel, Carbon and Hydrogen".

Dr Zawodny "It has the demonstrated ability to produce excess amounts of energy, cleanly, withour harardous, ionizing radiation, without producing nasty waste".

Narrator: This clean form of energy is also powerful, able to support everything from transportation systems to infrastructure.

Dr Zawodny: The easiest implementation of this would be for the home. You would have a unit that would replace your water heater. And you would have some sort of cycle to derive electrical energy from that. And then it would dump it's waste heat into the water, or air handling system for the building. So it would be a dual use thing, it would be sitting there producing heat then you'd drive electricity from it to run your electronics. Power the house, power the building, power the light industry. And then the waste heat would be used for environmental control and warm water.

This video by NASA seems to validate the work we have been seeing recently by Rossi, Focardi, Piantelli and Celani and the claims that LENR (Cold Fusion) is a valid technology with enough power and potential to completely replace fossil fuels and polluting nuclear power.

This also comes on the back of an admition by Royal Dutch Shell that they too through their "Shell Game Changer" program are working on LENR technologies to replace fossil fuels.

Defkalion Announcement: May Include Testing / Certification by Independent Third Parties

Defkalion Green Technologies (DGT) will make a big announcement tomorrow (Wednesday) following many weeks of build up and anticipation.

Yesterday on their forum Defkalion posted:

What to expect then?  Well, based on their own statements we can hazard a guess at:
Third party testing and certification of Hyperions underway, perhaps even positive results from a credible third party. More documentation including Final product specifications and probably some photos.
Initially, Defkalion had been working closely with Andrea Rossi on an ambitious commercial project to roll-out eCat fusors to the masses.  The plans included a factory working at full capacity producing 300,000 Hyperions (DGT Name For Their eCat Fusor), with plans for additional factories and research facilities in Greece.

That is until the relationship soured with Rossi citing financial issues as the cause of the breakdown in relations. Defkalion countered with accusations that Rossi did not "meet parameters such as the stable operation of the device for at least 48 hours".

Defkalion seem very confident launching their Hyperion technology, while Rossi has been adamant that Defkalion do not know the industrial secret in order to successfully manufacture and produce the reactor cores.  The industrial secret being the method of preparation and treatment of the powdered Nickel with an as yet undisclosed "secret" catalyst.

When you look at everything that has happened since January, Defkalion have sensibly bowed out of getting involved in name calling and the media circus that surrounds Rossi and have maintained quite a professional stance since they first came on the scene.

One of their first statements was very positive indeed and also seemed to imply that Rossi's was not the only technology they were working with when they said Defkalion has: "Enhanced technology and engineering on Rossi’s invention or similar inventions".

On October 10th they made the following statement:

The technological breakthrough of LENR (or CANR) is no longer speculation. It is a fact that will eventually change the world’s energy problems and its sociopolitical divides through cheap, clean and green energy. The world needs LENR as a new energy source. Although change will not happen over-night, LENR will help reduce CO2 emissions, lower the cost of energy, and provide longevity to our planet’s energy needs.

Defkalion sees its role with responsibility and asks the community at large to continue its support.

Defkalion has:
• Enhanced technology and engineering on Rossi’s invention or similar inventions
• Prepared business models for international expansion
• Established a strong network of global contacts
• Prepared legislative and certification procedures
• Ensured national, regional and international network in politics and business
• Prepared global financing

Defkalion has worked in close partnership with Andrea Rossi for a very long time to prepare a commercially viable and industrially applicable product using his invention. Defkalion invested a lot of money to evolve Rossi’s E-Cat lab prototype into its Hyperion product. Defkalion is now at the stage where its industrial prototype is ready for production.

More recently they produced this press release which features pictures of Hyperion prototypes and of the inside of their workshop.

Soon after they clarified some of the points made in the press release:

"We have to clarify that two of the pictures in our November 14th Press Release are from a low-end Hyperion single reactor pre-industrial version7 prototype. Several components on it (isolations, security components, anti-explosive protection, casing, functional I/O etc) have been deliberately omitted."

"Final products for mass production, that will be released following their prototypes certification, do have some minor differences in engineering/architecture and their assembly quality. A full specs sheet as well as product's basic design and their scheduled third party testing will be released as per our announcement of November 14th.
Thank you"

More recently an article with Defkalion's Alexander Xanthoulis in Greek publication Tovima shed more light on developments with Defkalion painting themselves as having a more stable and advanced product than Rossi. The article has been through Google translate, so as always some of the meaning is lost in translation.

“We not only continue our program and we are almost ready, with technology that precedes that of Rossi during a year. Specifically, within the next 15 days there will be announcements and initiated testing and certification by independent third parties. We will present the final product – not just a laboratory prototype – with all its subsystems to operate according to European safety standards. ”

“All the technology used in devices at the Hyperion KW and systems 1 to 5MW are our own design – different from those of Rossi” he replied. “As for the control, was already our own design and construction, and Mr. Rossi has signed acceptance certificate shows that it is ours. Even in the recent trial in October when he used some modules of our own design. However, the main and big difference in our device than that of Rossi is that our system is stable in performance, while that of Rossi or the last test failed to yield stable for more than five and a half hours. ”

So the rift between you was not due only to non-payment of first installment repayment, said Mr. Rossi?

“Not sure. We had finished the 15 million dollars of first dose, but Mr. Rossi did not sign the protocol of receipt, asking him to meet parameters such as the stable operation of the device for at least 48 hours. This was the real cause of the  interruption of cooperation, but not celebrated in the media because they want to continue a deleterious confrontation. Us us interested in real progress, and this success. The technology will present a few days the world will be entirely Greek and appreciate its contribution to the overthrow of what exists in the energy market. “

One rather positive outcome in all this is for neutrals is that despite the cavernous differences of opinion between all of the parties, Defkalion, Rossi and even Piantelli and Krivit - they all agree that the LENR phenomena is real.  This fact alone should give sleepless nights to even the most determined pseudosceptics.

It is possible that this announcement by Defkalion will be relatively tame, but  I don't expect that to be the case. There is a small, but nevertheless potential possibility that If Defkalion have progressed far enough to announce positive independent test results from a well-respected third party then this whole thing could go supernova overnight. Whether tomorrow is that day or many weeks away I have a strong feeling we ain't seen nothin yet.

A smattering of mainstream media exposure so far is nothing compared to the what is coming down the line.

Rossi: New NE USA eCat Customer Will Be Announced Publicly

In a very promising announcement on Rossi's blog today we have something very positive to look forward to - the public disclosure of a North Eastern USA based company who have purchased one of Rossi's 1MW ecat plants.

    How long do you think it will be before there is a 1MW customer that is willing to talk about their experiences with the product and act as a reference? Having another customer out there who is willing to act as a reference could provide tremendous leverage. This would be far more valuable than any public test. It would silence the skeptics forever.

Today we sold in the USA a 1 MW plant which will go to a normal Customer. This installation will be visitable by the qualified public. 

We wait to have completed the contractual procedure through the attorneys, then we will give communication. It will be in the North East of the USA, where I have been in these days.

Previously we had heard that Rossi's trip to Massachusetts had not been fruitful, but it looks like this new customer was picked up there. So which large companies in NE USA would be interested in buying a 1MW fusion reactor? You decide.
